Q: Where does this ranking data come from?

Every figure is sourced from USAspending.gov , the official federal spending database mandated by the DATA Act. Recipient identity is reconciled to SAM.gov Unique Entity ID registrations, so subsidiaries that file separately roll up to a single parent contractor where the federal record supports it.

The 500 largest federal contractors ranked by FY2024 obligations. Together they account for $612.6B in federal contract spending. The top 5 alone capture about 20% of the total; the top 10 capture roughly 27%. Every figure is a direct read of USAspending.gov.

What This Ranking Means

"Total obligations" is the sum of binding commitments the federal government has recorded against each contractor in the fiscal year. It is the standard unit reported on USAspending.gov and used by Congress, the GAO, and federal inspectors general. Obligations differ from outlays — the actual cash that leaves the Treasury — and from contract ceilings. A contractor can have a large multi-year ceiling but show modest obligations in any given year if only part of the work has been authorized.

Concentration is the dominant story this ranking tells. The Department of Defense alone accounts for roughly half of all federal contract spending, and within DOD, five prime contractors capture about 30%. The civilian side is more spread out but still concentrated: a small set of professional-services firms (Leidos, SAIC, Booz Allen Hamilton, Accenture Federal) capture an increasing share of agency spending as legacy IT systems are modernized.

Where the Money Goes by Sector

Defense dominates the top of the list. The Department of Defense alone obligated $326.1B across 1,472 awards in the most recent fiscal year, anchoring the top of every contractor ranking. Aircraft, ships, missiles, satellites, vehicles, and weapons systems all flow through the DOD prime contracts captured here.

Beyond defense, federal IT and professional services have grown into a meaningful second tier. Civilian agencies — DHS, VA, HHS, IRS, USDA — each sustain a stable of professional-services contractors handling cybersecurity, software development, cloud migration, and data analytics. Healthcare administrators (Medicare Advantage, TRICARE) make up a third tier, with Humana, Centene, and similar firms appearing in the top 25 thanks to administrative-services contracts more than direct medical care.

The pattern is most extreme in defense — five primes (Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing, Northrop Grumman) account for roughly 30% of all DOD spending.

Every figure is sourced from USAspending.gov, the official federal spending database mandated by the DATA Act. Recipient identity is reconciled to SAM.gov Unique Entity ID registrations, so subsidiaries that file separately roll up to a single parent contractor where the federal record supports it.

The ranking covers FY2024 federal contract obligations as published by USAspending.gov. The current dataset was last refreshed June 2026. USAspending publishes daily updates from federal agencies; we pull the latest at each refresh and recompute the full ranking against the current dataset.

Why does the same contractor sometimes appear under multiple names?

Federal records sometimes carry the same parent under multiple legal names — divisions, subsidiaries, holding-company variants. We reconcile to the SAM.gov Unique Entity ID where possible, but normalization is imperfect. If you see what looks like a duplicate, check the linked profile pages: divergent UEIs typically mean the federal record itself treats them as separate entities, often because they are.

Rankings sort recipients by total federal obligations for FY2024 as published by USAspending.gov. Recipient identity is reconciled to SAM.gov Unique Entity ID registrations. Industry context is drawn from the Product and Service Code hierarchy maintained by the Federal Procurement Data System.
